Feeders continue to attract large numbers of birds. We have had 10 turkeys coming to our feeders daily. Tree Sparrows and juncos are by far the most common bird at our feeders.
The cold weather has returned and feeder activity is definately up. Today, we had 25 Gold Finches and 9 turkeys at the feeders.
The warm weather seems to have slowed much of the feeder activity. You should keep your feeders stocked as the cold weather is sure to come very sson.
Now is the time to clean out your bird houses. Your houses may still be used as a roosting site this winter. Last winter we had a Downy Woodpecker use a bluebird box to roost in each night.
Migration is underway. Soon we will be seeing the snow birds (Juncos) reappearing at our feeders. Watch for sapsuckers and native sparrows arriving before the end of the month. Young birds are still being seen the feeders. They are going to have to grow up very fast this year.
Feeder activity has continued at a fever pitch this month. Fledglings continue to dominate at the feeders. Look for more Goldfinch and Hummingbird activity, many customers are reporting higher numbers of goldfinches than at any other time of the summer. Hummers are fattening up and getting ready to head south. You can help by keeping your feeders full.
Nesting is winding down and the migrant birds will be preparing for their trip south. Its hard to believe but they have to fatten up for the long trip which will begin for some birds next month.
June is nesting month and all of our resident birds are raising their young. Look for parent birds to be feeding their babies at your feeders.
May is spring migration for warblers, vireos, tanagers, orioles and hummingbirds. Our yards are alive with birds and bird sounds. Bird activity reaches a fever pitch this month as migrants move through the area and our summer resident birds return.
April is the beginning of spring migration for many birds. Phoebes, towhees and the first warblers of spring are returning. Hummingbirds and orioles will be arriving in the later part of the month. As the month progresses the birding improves with each passing day, the end of the month will bring an invasion of birds into our yards and parks. You should take the time to go outside and enjoy this spectacular event this spring.
Its almost nesting season. Bluebird boxes should be up and ready to go. We already getting reports of them looking for nesting sites. Also, Purple Martin houses should be positioned for the scouts to return.
Strong winter weather will put great stress on your backyard birds. You should keep your feeders full and be sure to provide a reliable water source for your birds. The foods you provide should be of high calories. We have Winter Blend and Choice Blend which provide birds with more calories per ounce than any other individual seeds. Suet is great for insect eating birds such as woodpeckers or nuthatches.
Ootober brings in more waterfowl and our winter visitors will increase. Look for Juncos and any unexpected viitors. Pine Siskens are irrupting into Ohio this fall. They love to eat with goldfinches and will readily come to feeders.
September is a month for transition. Birds species are leaving and others are passing through the area. Warblers that nested in Canada are on their way to wintering grounds and will be filling up in our yards this month. Watch the wetlands for shorebirds on their way south.
Feeder birds are filling up at a record rate. If you want to attract more birds this fall, you need to try Bark Butter !! It is a new product formulated to attract the widest variety of birds to your yard. Stop in and see what is becomming one of our top selling foods.
As summer moves on our local birds are busy raising young and preparing for migration. We have been fortunate this summer to have families of Northern Cardinals, Downy Woodpeckers, House and Carolina Wrens, White-breasted Nuthatchs, Scarlet Tanagers and Eastern Bluebirds all successfully raise young on our property. The southern migration will begin in the next few weeks when shorebirds from the north begin heading through Ohio.
