Once upon a time, all coffee was grown under a canopy of protective shade. In a happy marriage of agriculture and ecology, the plants needed protection from the fierce tropical sun and a wide range of wildlife prospered. About thirty years ago, scientists developed sun-tolerant coffee plants and promoted their use. In an effort in increase revenue, trees began to be cut down to plant “sun coffee.” Fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides were now needed.
The Smithsonian’s Migratory Bird Center says that shaded farms harbor as many as 150 different bird species, while sun farms often have as few as five. Try some good coffee doing good work...
